This morning, Aaliyah and Jessica from the C3 Group popped into Priory Primary School to meet Mrs Yeung and the Eco Committee. The children made a presentation to help explain the main Eco work that the school has done this year. This focussed on a massive plastic-bottle top collection with tens of thousands of bottle tops being brought into school. This has been for the 'Schoolcycled' campaign, which is part of the 'MyGroup' company. Bottle tops are collected and exchanged for furniture which is made from the bottle tops, compressed into sheets. Pupils, parents, staff and friends have contributed. The children told Aaliyah and Jessica how this had developed from an artwork project last year, in which they had made pictures from bottle tops to highlight plastic in the oceans.
They have also been making a concerted effort to reduce paper usage and wastage. The Eco Committee had used scrap paper to make posters asking people around the school to reduce the amount they use. The slogan 'Think before you print' has been displayed around the school.
Finally, the children were eager to share their preparations for a massive school fair this Friday, in which there are going to be many stalls with an Eco message. These include a stall to buy second hand books, another stall for second hand teddy bears and a third one for school uniform. All of these have been donated by the school population and will be purchased by the school population. Waste not, want not!
It was no wonder that Aaliyah and Jessica were suitably impressed by the work of the Eco committee and the school. They had no hesitation in presenting the school with a certificate (a plaque will also be presented in an assembly near the start of the new academic year).
